Shopify gave its AI agent a fleet of Macs. Its developers still wouldn't use it.
Shopify's mobile team found that "just three or four workflows were enough to max out a laptop", and "if someone accidentally closed a laptop lid, the work stopped." River, their AI agent in Slack, ran on Linux: "it could edit Swift, but building and testing the iOS app still meant going back to the same laptops." So they built Remote Dev, a fleet of warm Macs ready in minutes, and taught River to record the bug, fix it and show the before and after. But "it's not only build it and they'll come. Even internally." Some people had tried River before and thought "This is not for me, I'll go back to coding locally": River created only 6% of merged mobile pull requests. Shopify turned River into a character in an internal ad, and by week nine she wrote 61%.

The hall, the desks, the drawn team and Joe, River's drawn figure, the Linux box and the spotlight are dramatizations; the ad's frames are Shopify's own (shown silent), and every quote and number on screen is from the sources.

Shopify gave its AI agent a fleet of Macs, and its developers still wouldn't use it. Sounds backwards? It's in Shopify's own engineering blog. Because three or four agents maxed out a laptop, and closing the lid killed them. Sound familiar? But River, their agent in Slack, ran on Linux. She could edit the iPhone app, not build it. So, they built the fleet, a warm Mac for every agent, ready in minutes. But River didn't know this. On her own Mac, she kept insisting iOS can't run on Linux. So, they taught her to prove it. Film the bug, fix it, film the fix. But they'd been burned before. Not for me. River wrote 6% of their mobile pull requests. So, Shopify did what this video does. It made River a character. Joe spends 8 hours testing the app. River does it while getting coffee. By week nine, she wrote 61%. They closed the lid. She keeps going. Which is wild, because at first…
