Anthropic engineers admit Claude codes better than them. So what is left for them?

· by Tony Tang

Anthropic's own engineers say Claude now writes better code than they do. It's in their article about source control: merges went from ~2,500 a day in May to over 30,000 by September, and git, built so you can code offline on a plane, couldn't keep up with ~100 GB of history and ~25 million checkouts a day. Seven people built Scion in five months: checkouts from minutes to seconds. The twist: one piece they wrote by hand and "thought was good", Claude rewrote with 20× less memory, 4× faster. So what's left for engineers? Their article answers in one word: "Very often, we found that the role of the engineers was to tell Claude 'no.'"

The code on screen, the commit stream, the clone bars, the laptop and plane, the commit log and the tower of checks are dramatizations; every number on screen is Anthropic's.

When did you last tell an AI no?

Anthropic's own engineers admit Claude codes better than them. So, what's left for them? It's not a rumor. It's in their own article about source control. Here's why. In May, Anthropic merged 2,500 changes a day. By September, 30,000. Git couldn't keep up. 100 GB of history. 25 million checkouts a day. But, Git isn't broken. It was built for you, so you can code on a plane. Claude never gets on a plane. So, seven people built Scion in 5 months. Checkouts went from minutes to seconds. But, here's the part that stings. That rewrite, it happened. They wrote one piece by hand and thought it was good. Claude's version, 20 times less memory, four times faster. So, if Claude out-codes them, what's left for you? Their article answers in one word. No. Very often, their job was to tell Claude no. No. Don't read the whole commit log to find one merge. No. Don't bury a service you trust in checks. Claude writes the code. Be the one who says no. Because…
